Greg Abbott decision to bus migrants to LA condemned as ‘despicable stunt’

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas's decision to bus migrants to Los Angelesthis week has been decried as a "despicable stunt", as advocates in California reported that the group was not offered food during the 23-hour trip. 

On Wednesday, 42 migrants, including 15 youth and three babies, arrived at Union Station in downtown LA, said Jorge-Mario Cabrera, the communications director for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights-Los Angeles (Chirla), who met the group when they arrived. The travelers he spoke to came from Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala and Haiti, and one came from China, he said, adding some told him they had been on the bus for nearly a day without any food or drink...

Texas governor Greg Abbott sends ‘1st bus’ of migrants to Los Angeles

The news follows recent reports suggesting that the number of migrants crossing the southern border is at its lowest since Joe Biden took office, and that the influx of people that some predicted would occur after the end of pandemic restrictions had not materialized. 

"Los Angeles is not a city motivated by hate or fear and we absolutely will not be swayed or moved by petty politicians playing with human lives," Bass said. "For everything that we do, we will continue to lock arms and we will continue to lead. And we will always put people's health and wellbeing over politics."…

Meanwhile, the day after the debacle of Danna's health emergency, Dominick Mireles, Philadelphia's emergency management director, fired off a stern letter to Nim Kidd, the chief of the Texas division of emergency management, a copy of which has been seen by the Guardian.

Mireles wrote "to request that you uphold a core tenet of our profession: collaboration".

It went on: "Your bus of asylum seekers that arrived yesterday took the city of Philadelphia and its partners by surprise. As you may have heard, a child required emergency medical care upon arrival."

The letter had a list of measures expected by the Philadelphia authorities, including 72 hours notice prior to buses arriving, health screening, notification of passengers with disabilities or special needs, families being kept together and buses reporting to a "safe and secure location of choice, not a street corner"…

A city source familiar with the handling of asylum seekers told the Guardian last week that there had been no response to the letter and Texas officials have still not coordinated any plan with Philadelphia, despite sending more buses…

A number of Trump-allied groups, including Tea Party Patriots and FreedomWorks, law firms with ties to Trump and state-based conservative groups are paying to organize the protests and even bring in individuals from outside of the cities where demonstrations take place, according to The New York Times.
