Conservatives Call For ‘Truck Control’ In Wake Of Terrorist Attack In Nice

In the wake of a Bastille Day terrorist attack in Nice, France in which 84 were left dead and many more injured when a truck drove through a crowd, some conservative politicians and pundits have used the tragedy to sarcastically call for “truck control” in an absurd attempt to refute calls for gun control after mass shootings.

Foremost among them is former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who took to Fox News to say that because there was one attack involving a truck, he now believed President Barack Obama would call for regulations on trucks....

France Attacker Called Volatile, Showed No Jihadist Links

The man responsible for turning a night of celebration into one of carnage in the seaside city of Nice was a petty criminal who hadn't been on the radar of French intelligence services before the attack. 

The Islamic State group claimed Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel as a "soldier" on Saturday, but what is known so far about Bouhlel suggests a troubled, angry man with little interest in Islam. 

The 31-year-old was born in Msaken, a town in Tunisia, but moved to France years ago and was living in the country legally, working as a delivery driver. At an apartment bloc in the Quartier des Abattoirs, on the outskirts of Nice, neighbors described the father of three as a volatile man, prone to drinking and womanizing, and in the process of divorcing his wife. His father said Bouhlel had violent episodes during which "he broke everything he found around him."...

Trump Jumps To Conclusions Minutes After Nice Attack, Says He Would Declare A World War As President | ThinkProgress

In back-to-back interviews with Fox News hosts Greta Van Susteren and Bill O’Reilly, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump condemned Muslims and immigrants for a horrific truck attack in the French resort town of Nice, France that occurred late Thursday.

No terror group or organization has yet claimed responsibility after 77 people were killed and about 100 injured when a truck plowed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day fireworks. When Van Susteren asked Trump to contrast what Obama would say about the attack with what he would say, Trump immediately cited “radical Islamic terrorism” as a potential cause, then said “I don’t think the people come out of Sweden, okay? It’s probably, possibly but if it is indeed, radical Islamic terrorism, it’s about time that [Obama] would say so, okay?”

“I mean, it just happened now,” Trump admitted, before speculating that the attack could have been carried out by a Muslim as in “Orlando, like in San Bernardino, like in Paris, like in the World Trade Center, like many other places, if it’s radical Islamic terrorism.”

Even if the attacks are ultimately linked to Muslim or immigrants, Trump was speaking as a presidential nominee just minutes after the attack, when none of this information was known....
