Anthropic files for potentially the biggest IPO ever as CEO warns of AI's existential risk to humanity | PBS News

The filing comes weeks after CEO Dario Amodei argued in an essay for slowing the development of the most advanced AI models. An IPO could provide Anthropic with enormous resources to accelerate its expansion. The amount the company ultimately raises remains uncertain, as do its final valuation and offering price, but even at lower estimates, it would turn the five-year-old startup into one of the world's most valuable companies and potentially boost the wealth of Amodei and his sister and co-founder, Daniela, by billions of dollars…

Lawmakers urge Congress to act after AI researcher’s dire warning - Live Updates - POLITICO

“I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic,” said Coxon, who specialized in training models. “Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”

He added: “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt.”…

Groups tied to OpenAI and Anthropic are spending big on the midterms : NPR

Around the country, groups associated with AI and tech are trying to influence elections from Senate races to local offices, even as Americans register increasing discomfort with the technology's ramifications for jobs, energy bills and society. AI-focused super PACs have already spent $43.3 million on congressional races this cycle, according to OpenSecrets, a nonprofit that tracks campaign spending…

Senators urge ceasefire in Pentagon’s fight with Anthropic - POLITICO

The senators call for a ceasefire in the letter, explaining that contract negotiations "are not the ideal context in which to establish policy" and suggesting the two sides are "highly unlikely" to meet Hegseth's "hasty" Friday deadline.

The lawmakers also warned that invoking the Defense Production Act and labeling Anthropic a supply chain risk "without credible evidence" could impede cooperation between the military and Silicon Valley. And they said that given the ongoing global AI race, the U.S. "cannot afford to take on any preventable risk that would give our adversaries, particularly China, an edge."…

Anthropic says it ‘cannot in good conscience’ allow Pentagon to remove AI checks

"Our strong preference is to continue to serve the Department and our warfighters – with our two requested safeguards in place," he said. "We remain ready to continue our work to support the national security of the United States."

At the core of the Department of Defense and Anthropic's standoff is a disagreement over how the AI company will permit its product, Claude, to be used. The Pentagon has demanded that Anthropic turn off safety guardrails and allow any lawful use of Claude, while Anthropic has pushed back against allowing Claude to be used for mass domestic surveillance or in autonomous weapons systems that can kill people without human input...

US AI giant accuses Chinese rivals of mass data theft

These allowed the three labs to siphon off capabilities they had not independently developed at a fraction of the cost – and in so doing circumvented export controls on powerful US technology intended to preserve American dominance in AI.

The company argued the practice posed national security risks, saying models built through illicit distillation are unlikely to retain safety guardrails designed to prevent misuse – such as restrictions on helping develop bioweapons or enabling cyberattacks...

Hegseth threatens to blacklist Anthropic over “woke AI” concerns : NPR

For months, Amodei has insisted that using AI for domestic mass surveillance and AI-controlled weapons are ethical lines the company will not cross, calling such use "illegitimate" and "prone to abuse." According to a source familiar with the Hegseth meeting, Amodeo stressed those positions again on Tuesday.

Hegseth has said Anthropic needs to allow the U.S. to use its AI in all "lawful" purposes, which could include AI-directed warfare and surveillance…

Trump’s war on ‘woke AI’ will stifle innovation — and free speech

The First Amendment was designed precisely to prevent government actors from dictating which viewpoints are acceptable. But America's leadership on AI and free speech depends on maintaining a steadfast commitment to these principles...
