Democrats finally succeed in passing pro-LGBT amendment, but conservatives kill it on House floor

Ten days ago, House Republicans belatedly coerced seven of their number to switch their votes from "aye" to "nay" on an amendment to a defense spending bill that would have prohibited federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, sending the proposal down to a narrow defeat after it had appeared to pass. The maneuver, which involved holding a two-minute vote open for almost eight minutes as seven GOP members changed their votes "quietly from the back benches," was utterly shameful.
