The Wilmington massacre of 1898: a shocking episode of racist violence | North Carolina | The Guardian

North Carolina city marks 125th anniversary of the white-supremacist attack with a week of memorial events…

The violence in Wilmington was not unique. Historians and EJI researchers have documented at least 34 instances of mass violence during Reconstruction where scores of Black people were murdered by white mobs intent on re-establishing white supremacy and resisting Black political participation. It is a history that is not well-known but critically relevant for understanding the continuing struggle for racial justice and the many obstacles that still remain…

Chinese censors remove protest site Sitong Bridge from online maps

Chinese censors scrubbing the internet of any words or symbols that could be used to reference the Tiananmen Square massacre in the run-up to Sunday's anniversary have a new target in their sights: a bridge in Beijing where a rare protest was staged last year.

UK study of 1948 Israeli massacre of Palestinian village reveals mass grave sites | Palestinian territories | The Guardian

Palestinian survivors and historians have long claimed that men living in Tantura, a fishing village of approximately 1,500 people near Haifa, were executed after surrendering to the Alexandroni Brigade and their bodies dumped in a mass grave believed to be located under an area that is now a car park for Dor Beach. Estimates have ranged from 40 to 200 people…

‘We want our land back’: for descendants of the Elaine massacre, history is far from settled

Like in Tulsa, the massacre happened here because we were doing well. They sent people from Helena and neighboring states to Elaine to murder and lynch us. They changed our deeds in the courthouse and did whatever they needed to do to get us out of the way so they could take our land. There were some sharecroppers here, but many of us were families, like mine, who owned land."
