After hearing the first-ever “Atheist Town Hall,” moderated by Cara Santa Maria, we listen to New York Times op-ed columnist Michelle Goldberg describe the scary rise of “Christian nationalism” during the Trump era.

Second Law Enforcement Agency Joins Federal Investigation Of Fox News

A second law enforcement agency has joined the U.S. Justice Department’s investigation into Fox News, according to a CNN report published Thursday.

Financial crimes experts from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service — which investigates mail and wire fraud and identity theft cases — are involved in the federal investigation into the network, CNN reported, citing four unnamed sources connected to the investigation....

WATCH: Bill O'Reilly Goes Ballistic When Al Franken Exposes Him as a Liar in Vintage Segment

Before he was a U.S. Senator, Al Franken was the author of Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, a satirical book that excoriated conservative media.

In 2003, he faced off with one of the subjects of his book, the infamous Bill O’Reilly, during a panel discussion at the author event BookExpo. O’Reilly and Franken both spoke on the panel, beginning with the Fox News host, who promised he doesn’t “call anybody a liar” and doesn’t lie himself—as evidenced by the fact that his show doesn’t retract things....

Fox News is paying Bill O’Reilly tens of millions as punishment for sexually harassing women

On Wednesday, 21st Century Fox officially fired longtime Fox News primetime star Bill O’Reilly after repeated allegations of sexually harassing women. Their decision to terminate O’Reilly was hardly an act of contrition, but rather an act of self-preservation: advertisers were fleeing the network at an alarming rate, and Fox News was forced to run truncated shows during their evening primetime, traditionally the most lucrative timeslot on a network’s daily schedule....

Donald Trump cannot dismantle our First Amendment. But Fox News can—and it's already starting

We're immediately seeing how our nation's First Amendment will "change" under Trump. Anti-Trump protesters were “hired,” Trumpites say; public opposition to his administration is not just illegitimate, but itself a conspiracy by elites against his movement. His potential Homeland Security chief, David Clark, said the protests had no "legitimate reason" and "should be quelled."

Trump can't do these things himself. Bill O'Reilly, however, can do these things. Sean Hannity or Fox & Friends can do these things. By spreading the message that dissenters themselves are a conspiracy against Trump fueled by dark forces, they can help Trump not just demonize those opponents but take unprecedented steps against the press and the public....

Bigotry, Denial and the Distortion of American History: Bill O'Reilly's Racist Dreams of 'Well-Fed' and Happy Black Slaves

On Monday at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, First Lady Michelle Obama delivered an eloquent speech about the long arc of progress in American history and the dangers posed by the proto-fascism, cynicism, and bigotry channeled by Donald Trump. As part of that narrative, Michelle Obama decided to offer some teaching about a little-known aspect of American history. She shared how:

"That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves."

This was a profound moment of vulnerability and strength. Michelle Obama, as a black American woman, and descendant of black human property, is also the wife of the most powerful black man on the planet. But, she lives in a building that was built with the blood, labor, sweat — and deaths — of black people. As a black woman, her reminding the public that it was slaves who looked like her that built the White House is a signal to the centrality of black women to the black freedom struggle and American history. Michelle Obama’s allusion to the complicated intersections of freedom and slavery in America also highlights the unique and especially perilous and tenuous space that the black female body occupied both during slavery, and then later on in Jim and Jane Crow, where black women were subjected to arbitrary sexual violence and assault by white men because they were denied the exclusive protections of “white femininity.”...

O’Reilly’s Comments On White House Slaves Echo Actual Slaveowners

On Monday night, Michelle Obama brought the house down at the DNC in Philadelphia with an emotional speech where she illustrated the greatness of America with this line: “Today, I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.”

That remark prompted Bill O’Reilly to delve into the history of the construction of the White House. But his history lesson he provided his Fox News viewers on Tuesday was like one that would’ve been taught in Richmond in 1850.

After acknowledging that Michelle Obama’s comment was factually correct and providing a bit of the backstory, O’Reilly — a former history teacher — asserted that “Slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802.”...

The History Of Bill O'Reilly's Tattoo Obsession

In an interview on Monday, Bill O’Reilly asked Republican Presidential front runner Donald Trump how he was going to get jobs for black Americans, considering “many of them are ill-educated and have tattoos on their foreheads.”

While, this time, O’Reilly’s comments sparked headlines and outrage, they’re part of a pattern of racist stereotypes that the Fox News host has been pushing for years....
