Majority of attempts to ban books in US come from organised groups, not parents

Many of the organisations leading the book censorship movement are so-called "parental rights" groups – most prominently Moms for Liberty. This group has strong ties to the Republican Party and has been labelled "extremist".

"They aren't always moms, they don't always have kids, and they definitely don't care about 'liberty' for everyone else," wrote the American Civil Liberties Union's Paul Bowers in late 2023...

I Went Undercover At Moms For Liberty

Moms for Liberty wants to depict itself as a grassroots group made up of concerned moms who are worried about their children's education. In reality, they're a GOP astroturf group that has repeatedly peddled the "groomer" myth along with a host of other extreme positions. And to prove it, we went undercover at their conference in Philadelphia.

Librarians Are Not Groomers (w/Heath Umbreit) (Conspirituality podcast #201)

When Moms For Liberty attacks libraries with demands to ban books about MLK Jr and age-appropriate sex education, and claims that librarians are grooming their children into the trans agenda, they’re enacting the worst forms of neo-fascist bullying. But they’re also paradoxically defending a troubled American legacy against a librarian culture attempting to course-correct towards greater inclusion.

To discuss this problem, Matthew talks to Heath Umbreit, a reference librarian who works at a public library in the northeastern U.S. Mis- and disinformation has been a professional and personal interest of theirs for several years; Heath's study of the phenomenon focuses on a critical examination of popular narratives about disinformation, the concept of epistemic supremacy, and the ways in which information and disinformation intersect with systemic power differentials in American society.

Trolling Moms for Liberty during a BOOK BANNING

This is mostly satirical, but the last few minutes shows right winger Chris Rufo — originator of the whole panic over critical race theory and book bans, and "good Catholic" — explain that it's all about turning the public against public schools so that money can go to private corporations to run schools instead.

And note that those private schools often don't need to be accredited or meet any standards.

Weekly Roundup: Klanned Karenhood (Moms for Liberty) (Bradley Onishi and Daniel Miller; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

Brad begins with a long discussion of the Moms for Liberty conference in Philadephia. He centers his comments on the long history of “housewife populism” that goes back to the 1950s. Drawing on work from Gill Frank and Melissa Deckman, Brad argues that Moms for Liberty stands in a long lineage of grassroots movements led by women using the mantle of motherhood to advance an anti-LGBTQ and often White supremacist agenda.

Piece by Gillian Frank: https://wearethemeteor.com/moms-for-liberty-history-white-supremacy/

He also does a close reading of Dennis Prager’s comments from the conference – showing how the drive for “order” is the sacred value in Christian nationalist and right-wing spaces.

In the final segment he considers the category of Whiteness in relationship to the “color-blind” approach to race and racism that we are hearing about in the wake of the SCOTUS decision on college admission.

Moms for Liberty is part of a long history of rightwing mothers’ activism in the US

As the group has grown, so too have its political ambitions. Moms for Liberty places particular emphasis on capturing local school boards in order to secure greater control over school policy. More broadly, the group endorses legislation that would limit the topics that can be discussed in the classroom (for instance, Florida's so-called "Don't Say Gay" legislation), and they promote policies that allow parents to target books for removal from school libraries and classrooms.

The materials challenged by Moms for Liberty reflect the "war on wokeness" announced by conservative figures such as Tucker Carlson and Ron DeSantis. Group members regularly disrupt school board meetings to rail against books that address the nation's history of racial violence (maligned under the fuzzy category of "critical race theory"). Likewise, the group condemns materials that explore gender identity or advocate for LGBTQ+ acceptance – particularly those that explore transgender identity. Librarians, teachers and parents who defend these materials have been repeatedly harassed by group members as "groomers" or "pedophile sympathizers"...

Weekly Roundup: Moms for Book Bans, Dads for Dictators (Daniel Miller and Bradley Onishi; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

Brad begins by offering a metaphor for understanding how Christian nationalists and others view the United States: A complementarian marriage. The role of the cishet dad-husband as protector and the mom-wife as innocent homemaker provides a window into why so many conservatives want to ban books and are calling for dictators.

In the following segments Brad and Dan examine the ways this metaphor is playing out in the work of Moms for Liberty, Matt Walsh, and others across the country. Brad explains why he thinks that the Right will not flinch when their leaders suggest setting up camps for trans people. Dan unpacks the ways that Moms for Liberty is using a micro minority to take over schools. Brad relates their efforts to the Daughters of the Confederacy.

Opinion | A Tennessee teacher planned a Mother’s Day class. Then came the MAGA rage. - The Washington Post

Then Moms for Liberty — which is restricting classroom discussion and getting books purged from school libraries across the country — wheeled into action.

Members of its chapter in the red-leaning area around the school in Hamilton County attacked the idea on social media and in local newspapers as Leninist indoctrination, anti-Christian and a threat to Western civilization. One woman called on locals to pray for children to guard them against the demonic threat posed by those children's books...

Moms for Liberty has turned ‘parental rights’ into a rallying cry for conservative parents - The Washington Post

…The audience groaned when they heard the school system teaches students "starting in kindergarten" how to be cognizant of bias. They laughed when they heard one textbook lists ".gov" Web addresses as an example of a website that can be trusted for accurate information. And some members booed when they heard that elementary school students are being taught about climate change and "environmental racism," with references to President Barack Obama, John F. Kerry and Oprah Winfrey…
