They did so amid pressure from former president Donald Trump, who claimed in March that the consortium "pumps the rolls" for Democrats. Consequently, voter rolls in those states — Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia — are less accurate, and it's becoming harder to detect the small number of people who improperly vote in multiple states. Indeed, as 2024 begins, these same election officials find themselves spending taxpayer dollars to re-create the very tools that the system they abandoned had provided...

GOP-led states that left ERIC are searching for replacements : NPR
"These states have decided that instead of using a wheel, they're going to invent a spherical device that will allow them to easily transport and roll items from A to B," said Josh Daniels, a former Republican county clerk in Utah.
"Political officials who made bad choices to exit ERIC now have to make up the difference by essentially reinventing ERIC but without the benefit of years of experience and a system that has improved over time."

Why the far right targeted ERIC, a tool to catch voter fraud : NPR
It was the first of many times to come in which Republican officials would turn their back on this tool they once praised, in an effort to score political points with their base.
This NPR investigation, which found video of the Houma event posted to Facebook, is the first to report that Ardoin announced his ERIC decision to conservative activists.
And a deeper look at the red-state exodus that followed — eight states and counting have now pulled out of ERIC — shows a policy blueprint for an election denial movement, spearheaded by a key Trump ally, eager to change virtually every aspect of how Americans vote.
Even if it means making voter fraud easier to get away with.
"It's this crazy zeal to get out of ERIC," said J. Christian Adams, a conservative elections attorney, "that is going to cause voter fraud to flourish."…

The group's 10-page error-riddled white paper, which was posted on its website on 9 March, falsely slams Eric as a "syndicate founded by leftists" and charges that Eric has been "far more effective at swelling voter registration rolls than at keeping them clean"…
