Trans women are being assaulted by guards and male detainees while in ICE detention

Transgender immigrant women are being sexually and physically assaulted by male detainees and guards while in ICE custody, an unconscionable fact that stands to worsen now that the federal government’s only dedicated detention facility for gay, bisexual, and trans detainees has shut down. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, an estimated 5,000 trans people are currently jailed, with an average of 65 trans immigrant women detained by ICE daily. Despite the smaller numbers, they are extremely vulnerable to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and humiliation at the hands of staff and the general population....
