Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) returned to the Senate floor with what he called a "simple truth": Florida's insurance market is under severe pressure from climate-related risks.
During his speech, Whitehouse cited rising insurance premiums, increasing policy non-renewals, insurer insolvencies, and growing risks to Florida's housing and mortgage markets. He argued that hurricanes and other climate-related disasters are driving long-term economic consequences, warning that Florida has become the "canary in the American climate risk coal mine."
The senator also criticised Republicans for objecting to previous Senate resolutions acknowledging climate-related impacts and urged lawmakers to recognise what he described as the growing financial risks facing homeowners.
