President Trump has claimed that he knew nothing about the “We Build the Wall” campaign to crowdfund a portion of Trump’s beloved border wall — which has now led to criminal charges against Stephen K. Bannon for allegedly using it to defraud Trump supporters.
Trump has even said he didn’t like the crowdfunding idea itself when he read about it, telling reporters he’d said: “This is for government. This isn’t for private people.”
That latter quote seems dubious, since Trump isn’t known to be particularly scrupulous about separating private and public interests — though it’s possible he might object to such a blurring if it were lining the pockets of someone other than himself.
But that aside, CNN reports that there are indeed now good grounds for doubting these claims:
