The News Roundup — Domestic (The 1A) 2020-04-03

President Donald Trump’s COVID-19 task force made several stark announcements Tuesday. Anywhere between 100,000 and 200,000 Americans might die before the coronavirus pandemic is contained in the United States. And these death projections assume that the entire country institutes stay-at-home orders by the end of next week.

In order to “flatten the curve,” most governors have issued statewide stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a statewide stay-at-home order just this week — after heavy criticism. But governors in Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota have not restricted movement statewide.

As the virus spreads throughout the country, the government’s ability to provide the personal protective equipment that medical professionals desperately need has continued to diminish. The federal government’s stockpile of PPE, such as disposable gloves, respirator masks and other medical supplies is nearly depleted. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that New York City only has ventilator supplies to last the city six more days.
