Matt Dillahunty: The History of the Biblical Canon

While individual believers hold different views on the interpretation, reliability and authority of The Bible, it remains the only tangible source for Christian beliefs and claims. In this lecture we'll take a critical look at the history of this collection of ancient writings, the political and doctrinal battles which led to the current canon as well as the books and doctrines which fell by the wayside.

About the speaker:
Matt is the current host of 'The Atheist Experience' television program, a board member for the Atheist Community of Austin and a former fundamentalist Christian. An interest in entering the ministry prompted him to begin an intensive period of investigation in order to justify his beliefs and their foundations. At some point, reason won out and the only rational option was a rejection of religion, faith and superstition. He continues to study religious issues and has a passion for a critical examination of the Bible.

The Atheist Community of Austin hosts a monthly lecture series as a community service and a means of promoting and disseminating ideas of interest to atheists and the greater Austin community. Lecture topics usually focus on core areas of atheist interest such as science, skepticism, the impact of religion, philosophy, church/state separation, and community activism. While many of our lecturers are PhDs, lectures are targeted to a lay audience of people who want to enrich their understanding.
