The News Roundup — International (The 1A) 2020-04-10

Confirmed COVID-19 cases reached nearly 1.5 million worldwide this week. As the world’s epicenter, the disease has left the European Union with mounting deaths and economic turmoil. But countries in the bloc have been unable to come to an agreement for economic relief. It’s a divide that Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte says could be the end of the E.U.

Meanwhile in the U.K., Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered severe symptoms from COVID-19. Although his own condition is said to be improving as he leaves intensive care, the number of cases continue to rise as the British government fights to control the situation. It led to a historic address from the Queen, in which she thanked people for following lockdown procedures.

In China, the government lifted a lockdown on the city of Wuhan after the initial outbreak of coronavirus. The 76 day order was imposed following massive infections and an overwhelmed healthcare system. For the first time since the pandemic kicked off across the world, China reported zero deaths in a day. But while those efforts seem to have been successful, U.S. House members introduced a resolution that would condemn China for its handling of COVID-19.

We talk about the coronavirus around the world, and much more, on the global edition of the News Roundup.
