Friday News Roundup – Rocky Mountain Special (Joshua Johnson, 1A) 2018-06-15

We have a special edition of the Friday News Roundup this week, live from KUER, in Salt Lake City.

We continue to cover changes in trade policy. Utah and Idaho farmers are concerned about new moves on tariffs, and it is now a key political issue in the Utah Senate Race. Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney is running to replace Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, who has served Utah for seven terms.

Deb Haaland is one of at least four indigenous women who will be on the ballot in upcoming elections. If any win, they will become the country’s first Native American Congresswoman.

One year ago, Ashley Loring Heavyrunner from the Blackfeet tribe went missing in Montana. In March, the FBI joined the search at the request of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. There was a march and prayer vigil this week to raise awareness about her disappearance. Activists say she is one of many missing or murdered indigenous women.
