Friday News Roundup – International (Joshua Johnson, 1A) 2018-06-22

Amid the controversy about American border policy, the United States left the United Nations Council on Human Rights. Nikki Haley, ambassador to the United Nations, said the move was made because the organization was biased against Israel, and failed to hold abusers of human rights accountable.

In Afghanistan this week, the Taliban and Afghan security forces held a three-day ceasefire to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. The Taliban resumed fighting on June 18, although Afghan President Ashrif Ghani had asked to extend the ceasefire.

American Lieutenant General Scott Miller is also expected to be confirmed by the Senate to take over as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. This comes after the Senate boosted military spending by $82 billion dollars for next year, according to Rolling Stone. We talked about Afghanistan earlier this week. Here’s that show.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in Canada. Matteo Rossant, 21, a business graduate at Concordia University in Montreal, told The New York Times he sees it as a business opportunity.
“For a young entrepreneur like me, the pot industry feels easier to get into than the tech sector,” he said. “Besides, we millennials have the know-how when it comes to the pot-market — we have all smoked pot.”
