Time for the IRS to hold religious nonprofits accountable

Sing the Petition: Require religious organizations to file a Form 990. Religious organizations enjoy many special tax benefits that are not available to other nonprofits. Of all these exclusive privileges, not having to file a form 990 is the most outrageous. When a nonprofit files a form 990 the finances of that organization are available for Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and public inspection. This provides transparency to the public so individuals can make informed decisions about whether or not to donate to that nonprofit. Some religious organizations abuse this special tax break, and their religious leaders enrich themselves at the expense of their congregations. Churchgoers should have the same right to examine how their hard earned money is being spent. Requiring religious organizations to file a Form 990 would all but eliminate the greed and corruption that currently exists in religious organizations across the country. The Secular Coalition calls on the IRS to hold religious nonprofits accountable by requiring them to file a form 990. If we meet our goal of 10,000 signatures, we will send this petition to the IRS accompanied by a formal letter from the Secular Coalition for America. Help us shed light on the billions of church dollars being kept in the dark.
