Scott will need to take on Trump and convince fellow Republicans to abandon the vengeful worldview embraced by the former president in favor of a more positive message about the direction of the country. Relying on Reaganesque optimism about the brighter days ahead, Scott has called for a new era of American policy based on "personal responsibility", deeply rooted in rightwing principles like restricting abortion access and rigorously enforcing border security.
But it remains unclear whether enough Republicans are interested in dumping Trump.
"You cannot lean into 'the best days ahead of you' until you deal with the cancer inside of you at the moment," said Michael Steele, a former chair of the Republican National Committee and a vocal Trump critic. "The way you do that is to take down the guy who's perpetuating that narrative."…
