The News Roundup — Domestic (The 1A) 2020-06-05

Every officer involved in the death of George Floyd has now been charged for their roles in Floyd’s asphyxiation.

This week, the Minnesota Attorney General announced the other three officers are being charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Initially, only Derek Chauvin, the now-former officer that knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, was charged.

And former Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis accused President Donald Trump of being a threat to the Constitution, saying, “Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people.”

Mattis’s comments come after he’s previously declined to comment on President Trump, saying it would be inappropriate for him to do so.

And Facebook employees protested CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s handling of President Trump’s violent rhetoric on the platform. Some even staged a virtual walk-out.

Meanwhile, massive protests continued around the country. “”People are still figuring out exactly what they want to see but many are committed to coming out night after night here in D.C,” WAMU 88.5 reporter Jenny Gathright told us.
