Backwards Christian Soldiers: The Role of the Religious Right on the Militarization of U.S. Foreign Policy in the Post-9/11 Era

Although the influential role of religion in American politics is not new, its proximity to power is, as multiple developments over the past few decades have helped to make the Religious Right a particularly significant player in the militarization of U.S. foreign policy in the post-9/11 era. An analysis of some of the academic literature on the subject has shown that there appears to be at least four important themes trending on the issue: the first being that, with the conclusion of the Cold War era, the Religious Right found impetus for greater political mobilization through strategic political and military alliances, the rise of the movement’s leadership, and its growth in organizational strength....
