34 states and the District of Columbia have religious exemptions from child abuse and medical neglect laws. The extent of these loopholes vary but in at least six states, the exemption is so broad it would shield parents from manslaughter laws if their children died as a result of not receiving proper medical care. In every state where these loopholes exist, lawmakers are allowing personal religious beliefs to jeopardize children’s safety. This is unacceptable....
