The Real Reasons Why People Become Atheists (ReligionForBreakfast)

Scholars have identified the primary reason why theists become atheists: Credibility Enhancing Displays, or CREDs for short. CREDs are behaviors that people use to demonstrate their genuine commitment to a belief, value, or principle. These displays make the beliefs seem more credible and trustworthy to others, thereby enhancing the likelihood that observers will adopt similar beliefs or practices. Basically, if your co-religionists are not "practicing what they preach," there is a higher likelihood a theist will become an atheist.

What is Jesus Mythicism: Godless Engineer Interview

In this enlightening episode, our host continues his deep dive with the renowned Godless Engineer, exploring the intriguing subject of mythicism. Building on their previous conversation, they delve into the complexities of mythicism, examining the evidence and lack thereof for the historical existence of Jesus.

Godless Engineer, also known as John, shares his insights on how early Jewish Christians might have reinterpreted existing scriptures to create the figure of Jesus, paralleling the development of other mystery cults of the time. They discuss the implications of Paul's writings, the influence of mystery cults, and the reinterpretation of Old Testament scriptures.

Throughout the episode, our host and Godless Engineer address common objections and questions, including the argument that similar mystery cults were created by Satan to confuse believers. They also touch on the importance of critical thinking and the challenges of confronting deeply held beliefs with historical analysis.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the historical roots of Christianity, the development of religious stories, and the application of critical thinking to religious claims. Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion that challenges conventional narratives and offers new perspectives on ancient beliefs.

I Am Dying Out Loud: ONE NATION, ALL BELIEFS (Daniel Miller and Bradley Onishi; Straight White American Jesus podcast)

On this episode of ONE NATION, ALL BELIEFS (subscribe links below): Dave Warnock was caught up in the Jesus movement of the 70s and lived the bulk of his life as a Charismatic Evangelical, serving as a pastor on three different church staffs.

Following several years of internal struggle, Dave came to the conclusion in 2011 that he no longer believed in a personal God. In 2019 he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), a progressive neurodegenerative disease with an average 3-5 year life expectancy. In early 2023, Dave, along with Bevin Jett and Sheila Hoover, founded I Am Dying Out Loud, a nonprofit organization with the mission to enhance the quality of life by advocating against the unwanted intrusion of religion in the areas of healthcare, dying, and death, and by providing “bucket list” moments for those diagnosed with ALS.

The Bible Geek Podcast 22-003 (Robert M. Price)

The crucifixion story in all four gospels had to have been based on Josephus’ story of rescuing a friend from crucifixion. All four gospels were written after the Josephus “rescue”, so there is not a problem with the dates. But Paul talks about Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection before the Josephus rescue occurred. How did he know about it?

Concerning Pau's vision about the "Last Supper", I had for a long time accepted the mythicist argument that this was a vision Paul received from Christ and not something that went back to the historical Jesus, or a tradition of Jesus. But didn't Christians start having visions of Jesus only AFTER his death and resurrection? How would Paul be having a vision of Jesus BEFORE he even dies and resurrects??

1 Cor 11 says this happened on "the night he was handed over".

Could you explain the original language of the Old Testament, the language of the manuscripts, and how the text has evolved?

What is your understanding of why the word "jealous" is used to describe God?
What is Ephesians 3:18 about?
Is the object missing from the sentence?
Why are there four dimensions in the Pauline hyperreality?
Is Leviathan evil?
If a sun god is transformed into a human hero, for example Samson, is this demythologization?
And is demythologization the opposite of euhemerism?

Hi, I’m an Atheist! -- David G. McAfee (Julia Sweeney; Point of Inquiry podcast)

On today’s episode we introduce the show’s new guest host, Julia Sweeney and her interview with author David G. McAfee on his new book, Hi, I’m an Atheist!: What That Means and How to Talk About It with Others.

McAfee and Sweeney speak about the new book, how it helped Sweeney get back in touch with her atheism roots, his journey being raised in a religious household and becoming a non-believer, his challenges as an atheist in a Religious Studies program, what he sees in the bible from a literary perspective rather than from the perspective of a devout christian, and the role religion has in society.

David G. McAfee is a journalist, religious studies scholar, and author of Disproving Christianity and other Secular Writings, as well as a contributor to American Atheist magazine. McAfee attended University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated with a dual-degree in English and Religious Studies with an emphasis on Christianity and Mediterranean religions. He lives in California.

Julia Sweeney is known for her work on Saturday Night Live and as a pioneer for atheism. Her inspiring one-person stage show, Letting Go of God, chronicles her personal journey from Catholicism to atheism. In addition to being an actress Sweeney is a new addition to the Center for Inquiry board.
