History Minute (072): Education in South Carolina improved for all under Black leadership.

By 1873, so many Black people were elected to South Carolina state legislature that they became the majority. Under their leadership and their new legislation, South Carolina for the first time had free public schools. By 1876, there were 70,000 Black children going to school. What's more, many thousands more White children were going to school than before.
