Trump spoke about Mangione's case on Fox News on Sept. 18, and a Justice Department spokesman posted on social media in response to the clip that the president was "absolutely right." The spokesman's post was retweeted by a high-ranking Justice Department official, further disseminating Trump's televised comments about Mangione, according to the letter.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt at a briefing Monday referred to Mangione as "a left wing assassin" and a press release about a Trump executive order on domestic terrorism referenced Mangione, according to his lawyers.
On Tuesday, a White House official on Fox News called Mangione a "self-described so-called anti-fascist."
"The Government very well knows this statement to be false as they are in possession of his alleged extensive journal writings where the writer never once mentions being anti- (or pro) fascist," Mangione's attorneys wrote...
