Police can disarm 'suspects' without violence—when they choose to

Here’s a quick, mini refresher course. For all those who want to believe that the Black Lives Matter movement is a hate and/or terrorist group (it ain’t), understand this: The impetus was to show the disparate treatment that is afforded to certain individuals (like George Zimmerman, who acted as self-proclaimed “security” of his apartment complex) and law enforcement when it comes to the killing of black people. Daily Kos reported on one of those ways in early July, detailing how whites who point guns at police or other members of the public have not been summarily and extrajudicially murdered in the street because officers “feared for their lives.” That is the narrative that is spun when black folks are armed … or assumed to be armed.

 Korryn Gaines, 23, died Monday at the hands of a Baltimore county police department’s tactical unit. In response Blavity, a multicultural news and information site, lists 11 times police have successfully disarmed white people without killing anyone.
